In what can only be described as a swift and significant maneuver, Virtus Bologna has officially secured the services of Carsen Edwards. The acquisition brings the EuroLeague`s leading scorer from the past season to Italy, marking a major reinforcement for the Bologna-based club.
Edwards, a 27-year-old American guard, arrives from Bayern Munich, where he spent the last two seasons. His time in Germany saw him contribute significantly to Bayern`s domestic success, including securing two national championship titles. Before his tenure at Bayern, Edwards also played for Fenerbahce, consistently positioning himself among the EuroLeague`s elite players over the past three years.
Last season in the EuroLeague, Edwards posted impressive statistics, averaging 20.4 points per game, which earned him the distinction of being the competition`s top scorer. He also demonstrated playmaking ability, dishing out nearly 4 assists per contest. His outstanding performance was recognized with a place in the prestigious All-EuroLeague First Team.
Beyond consistent scoring, Edwards is known for bringing points, energy, and defensive intensity to the court. A prime example of his explosive scoring capability occurred last April in a game against Maccabi Tel Aviv. In just one quarter, he erupted for 26 points, including 8 three-pointers, setting an all-time EuroLeague record for points scored and three-pointers made in a single 10-minute period. A feat requiring not just skill, but a certain degree of audacity.
Standing 185 cm tall, Edwards entered the professional ranks after declaring for the 2019 NBA Draft. He was selected 33rd overall by the Philadelphia 76ers before his rights were subsequently traded to the Boston Celtics. His journey in Europe commenced in 2022.
Edwards also carved out a notable collegiate career at Purdue University, where he became a bona fide star, particularly during the 2019 NCAA Tournament. His performances were legendary, highlighted by two games where he scored 42 points each (against Villanova and Virginia), including a remarkable 10 three-pointers in one of those contests. He finished the tournament with 28 three-pointers in just four games, surpassing the previous record which was set over six games – an efficiency stat that speaks volumes.
For Virtus Bologna, securing a player with Edwards` scoring pedigree and proven ability at the highest European level represents a significant triumph. This move is anticipated to substantially bolster their roster and enhance their competitiveness in upcoming campaigns.
