Callum Smith Aims to Revitalize Career with Victory over Buatsi
Callum Smith, 34, is determined to demonstrate his continued prowess in the ring as he prepares for a critical light heavyweight bout against Joshua Buatsi in Riyadh this Saturday.
Smith’s career, marred by periods of inactivity, has seen him compete only once in both 2021 and 2022. His recent encounter with undisputed champion Artur Beterbiev in 2024 resulted in a decisive loss for the Liverpool native.
Despite recent setbacks, Smith has previously achieved greatness in the super-middleweight division. Seven years ago in Jeddah, he claimed the WBA world title by defeating George Groves. Two years later, he faced 168-pound kingpin Canelo Alvarez, suffering his first professional defeat.
Following a successful comeback fight late last year, Smith is now eyeing another shot at light-heavyweight glory, beginning with his matchup against fellow Briton Buatsi, who boasts an undefeated record of 19-0 (13 KOs).
Addressing skeptics questioning his return, Smith stated, “During inactive periods, it’s easy to be overlooked. I understand the perspective, given my previous active streak followed by a sudden halt. My career has been characterized by intermittent activity.”
He continued, “Having already been a world champion, I no longer need to compete. However, some question my motivation. I can assure you that my training has been excellent. If I doubted my abilities, I wouldn’t be here.”
Smith concluded, “I believe I have what it takes to become a two-weight world champion, and I’m on the brink of achieving that goal. I’m highly motivated and eager to step into the ring and prove myself.”
