Bruno Surace Emerges as Potential Challenger for Canelo Alvarez’s May Fight

According to ESPN boxing analyst Mike Coppinger, Canelo Alvarez might face Bruno Surace in May, preceding his highly anticipated September clash with Terence Crawford.

While official confirmation is pending, reports indicate that the super-middleweight champion is slated to face Crawford, 41-0 (31 KOs), in Las Vegas. Additionally, boxing promoter Turki Alalshikh announced that Canelo, 62-2-2 (39 KOs), has agreed to a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season.

The Ring Magazine, now under Alalshikh’s ownership, states that the Mexican boxer’s next fight will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, before his September encounter with Crawford.

Although Canelo’s opponent for the proposed May 4 date remains unconfirmed, Coppinger has mentioned two potential contenders. One is Jermall Charlo, who last fought in 2023, securing a unanimous decision victory over Jose Benavidez Jr.

The more likely candidate appears to be Surace, 26-0-2 (5 KOs), who recently made headlines with an impressive sixth-round stoppage of former world champion Jaime Munguia. Despite being a significant underdog, Surace’s performance in December catapulted him onto the world stage.

Initially expected to rematch Munguia, Surace now seems available for a potentially career-defining bout against Canelo. Coppinger reported on social media that negotiations for the Surace-Munguia rematch fell through due to disagreements over Surace’s purse.

With Canelo reportedly seeking an opponent to defend his titles, the rising super-middleweight contender Surace could prove to be an ideal match-up for the May event.
