British Boxing Board Orders Adeleye-Tshikeva Rematch After Referee Controversy

Sports news ยป British Boxing Board Orders Adeleye-Tshikeva Rematch After Referee Controversy

The British Boxing Board of Control has intervened following the disputed conclusion of Saturday`s British heavyweight title fight between David Adeleye and Jeamie Tshikeva at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester. Adeleye won by a sixth-round stoppage of Tshikeva, but the victory was overshadowed by significant controversy surrounding referee Ron Kearney`s actions.

The contentious moment occurred in the sixth round. Adeleye, with a record of 14-1 (13 KOs), knocked down Tshikeva, 8-2 (5 KOs), with a powerful left hook. However, this punch landed just after referee Kearney had audibly instructed the fighters to “break.” Instead of immediately separating the boxers, Kearney moved around them, allowing the fight to continue. Tshikeva, clearly affected by the punch, struggled to his feet, using the ropes for support. Adeleye then capitalized on the situation, attacking with a barrage of punches that dropped Tshikeva again and led to the fight being stopped.

Barry Smith, Tshikeva`s corner, was extremely upset, emphasizing that the initial knockdown, occurring right after the referee`s “break” command, was the heart of the issue. Responding to the uproar, the British Boxing Board of Control acted quickly. They met today and announced their decision online: “After reviewing the British Championship fight between David Adeleye and Jeamie Tshikeva from Saturday, April 5th, 2025, in Manchester, the Board Stewards have mandated an immediate rematch. Information regarding purse bids will be released soon, with bids due by Wednesday, May 14th, 2025.”

Adeleye, seemingly unaffected by the controversy, posted on Instagram after the fight, stating, “The knockout was legitimate. I am aware of the comments made by [Tshikeva`s] team, and I am willing to have a rematch. There is no need for further questions, debate, or confusion.”

With a rematch now scheduled, this heavyweight rivalry will continue, offering a second fight to definitively settle who is the better boxer.
