The boxing community is in mourning following the death of 40-year-old Nigerian light-heavyweight Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. He tragically died on Saturday, March 29th, during a bout against John Mbangu in Accra, Ghana.
The incident occurred in the third round of an eight-round fight. Reports indicate that after exchanging punches, Olanrewaju stumbled and collapsed with only seconds left in the round. Medical personnel responded immediately, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead soon after.
Initial reports suggest a possible cardiac arrest as the cause of death, but investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances.
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) released a statement confirming that Olanrewaju was medically cleared to fight by the Nigeria Boxing Board Control. The GBA also stated that Olanrewaju leaned back against the ropes without being hit before the referee stopped the fight and called for medical assistance.
Olanrewaju, known as “Success,” turned professional in 2019. He had a record of 13 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws. His career highlights included winning the Nigerian Light-Heavyweight title in 2021 and the West African Boxing Union title in 2023.
