Bibiano Fernandes Returns to ONE Championship for Farewell Fight

Bibiano Fernandes, the former ONE Championship bantamweight champion, is set to make his final appearance in the cage. After a period of uncertainty regarding his contract status, Fernandes has reached an agreement with ONE Championship for a retirement bout against Kevin Belingon at ONE 171 in Qatar.

The Brazilian veteran, known as “The Flash,” had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the promotion’s handling of his contract situation. However, Fernandes revealed that he has since reconciled with ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong. The two parties engaged in a constructive dialogue, leading to the arrangement of this farewell fight.

Fernandes boasts an impressive record in ONE Championship, with 12 victories in 15 appearances, including 11 successful bantamweight title defenses. His last fight for the promotion ended in a decision loss to Stephen Loman, after which his contract was not renewed.

The upcoming bout against Belingon will mark their fifth encounter, with Fernandes holding a 3-1 advantage in their previous meetings. The Brazilian fighter anticipates an explosive match, expecting Belingon to aim for a knockout while keeping the fight standing.

At nearly 45 years old, Fernandes reflects on his remarkable career, which includes being a two-division champion in Japan’s DREAM promotion before his successful stint in ONE Championship. He hopes to inspire future generations with his perseverance and dedication to martial arts.

Following his retirement from active competition, Fernandes plans to focus on coaching and developing champions in both jiu-jitsu and MMA. He may also continue his association with ONE Championship in a brand ambassador role, though his current priority is to conclude his fighting career with a victory.
