Jiu-jitsu legend Bia Mesquita aimed to impress UFC officials and secure her fourth professional MMA victory during UFC 313 fight week in Las Vegas, but the fight concluded unexpectedly.

Mesquita emerged victorious at LFA 203, which took place at Palms Casino Resort. Her win, however, came via disqualification after her opponent, Hope Chase, delivered an illegal upkick in the second round of their bantamweight match.

Following her victory, Mesquita stated in a media scrum that she believes Chase’s illegal move was deliberate.

“I always aim for the tap, but I feel like that was her way to escape without actually tapping,” Mesquita commented. “I dominated the first round. In the second round, I was ready to pursue the submission again when unfortunately, that occurred. The rules regarding such strikes were explicitly clarified in the pre-fight meeting, and she was fully aware of what she was doing. It’s still a win, although not in the manner I desired. I always seek a submission victory, but it is what it is.”

Mesquita’s record now stands at 4-0 since transitioning to mixed martial arts in 2024. Her initial three wins were all submission victories via rear-naked choke. She felt close to securing another submission in the second round before the illegal strike.

Regardless, her objective remains unchanged: to sign with the UFC promptly or contend for the LFA championship next.

“I felt this was a significant opportunity,” Mesquita said regarding performing in front of UFC matchmakers. “That’s why I’m somewhat frustrated because I wanted a submission, knowing all eyes were on me. However, I don’t believe this alters anything. They witnessed my readiness and my aggressive approach to finishing fights. I don’t think that perception has changed. If they call, I’m ready. If not, I’m prepared for the belt. I’m aiming for the bantamweight title. Nothing has changed. I demonstrated that I am ready for the next challenge.”
