Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz generated significant buzz at their New York press conference, setting the stage for a potentially brutal super-middleweight confrontation on July 12 at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Sheeraz, 25, is making the move up from middleweight after a successful three-year period, highlighted by a European title win over Tyler Denny last September. His prior challenge for a WBC title against Carlos Adames ended in a disputed draw, where many felt the British contender was fortunate. Now collaborating with new trainer Andy Lee, Sheeraz is focused on making a strong impression in his debut at 168 lbs.
Berlanga, the New York-born fighter of Puerto Rican heritage, is comfortable in high-profile situations. The former world title challenger is known for his aggressive style and steadfast self-assurance. The 27-year-old dismissed Sheeraz`s abilities, vowing to secure a dominant victory in his hometown.
Berlanga loudly proclaimed, “You already know what it is. I`m knocking him out!” He added, “He claims we`re overlooking him, but I never underestimate any opponent. You`re in New York City, the lion`s den. We aim to hurt him. I`m going to break every bone in this man`s face and do what I do best: put on a show.”
Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) was direct, describing Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs) as predictable. “He is a basic fighter,” Berlanga stated. “I have been boxing since I was six years old. I have already encountered what he offers. He is trained by Andy Lee? I defeated the previous fighter trained by him, and now I will do the same to this one.”
Sheeraz, undefeated in 22 professional fights and typically reserved, responded with intensity, embracing his role as the underdog. “I am coming, and I am coming for everything,” he declared. “This is the first occasion I have been underestimated. I understand; you are judged by your most recent performance. On July 12, when I achieve the victory, the Hamzah Sheeraz momentum will be fully restored.”
Given both fighters` reputations for explosive, offensive approaches, this significant contest could conclude prematurely. Sheeraz forecast: “I have learned a great deal since my last fight. I plan to use my jab, connect with a right hand to the chin, and knock him out. However, if the fight lasts 12 rounds, it will remain exciting.”
