Ben Whittaker Prepares to Unveil New Trainer Amidst Andy Lee Speculation
Promising light heavyweight boxer Ben Whittaker is expected to announce his new trainer within the next few weeks. This news comes as rumors circulate about a potential partnership with former world champion Andy Lee.
Whittaker, known as “The Surgeon,” is gearing up for a rematch against Liam Cameron on April 20th. This fight will mark his first bout under the guidance of a new head coach since parting ways with Sugar Hill Steward in March of last year.
Following his split from Steward, Whittaker temporarily reunited with his amateur coach and godfather, Joby Clayton. However, the young boxer is now ready to take the next step in his career by appointing a new lead trainer.
Speculation has been mounting that Dublin-based Andy Lee could be in the running for the position. Lee, who was trained by both Emanuel and Sugar Hill Steward during his own illustrious career, has become a highly respected figure in the boxing world. He has played a crucial role in Joseph Parker’s recent heavyweight title pursuit and has also been guiding welterweight contender Paddy Donovan.
When asked about the importance of bringing in a new trainer at this stage of his career, Whittaker emphasized the value of fresh perspectives. “A new voice, new ears, new eyes – all of that is really important,” he explained. “I’m looking for someone who can offer different critiques and identify things that others might have missed.”
Whittaker, a self-proclaimed perfectionist, expressed his dedication to the sport and his desire for continuous improvement. “Boxing is my life,” he stated. “It has given me so much, and I want to keep getting better. These changes are necessary for my growth as a fighter.”
If Whittaker does indeed team up with Lee, it could potentially involve relocating to Dublin for training camps. However, Lee has also been known to conduct training sessions in Morecambe and Saudi Arabia, particularly when working with heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
Reflecting on his decision to seek a new trainer, Whittaker acknowledged the need to push himself out of his comfort zone. “I was comfortable before, training at home with my amateur coach,” he admitted. “But now I need to challenge myself and explore new environments to reach the next level in my career.”
As the boxing world eagerly awaits the official announcement, it’s clear that Whittaker is committed to taking the necessary steps to elevate his performance and achieve his championship aspirations.
