BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom is keen to secure a significant opportunity for Mark Jeffers this summer, potentially offering a life-changing fight while also maintaining a contingency plan for the undefeated Lancashire super-middleweight.
Mark Jeffers (20-0, 7 KOs) and his team are currently exploring a possible summer showdown with the highly-rated super-middleweight Osleys Iglesias. This potential clash is being considered for the undercard of the Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda event, which is scheduled to headline a major show in New York on July 12.
A bout against Iglesias (13-0, 12 KOs) would represent a considerable step up in competition for Jeffers. Iglesias is ranked fourth by the IBF and is within close proximity of a world title shot.
Remarkably, all but one of Iglesias`s victories have come by knockout, positioning the Cuban fighter strongly for a potential challenge for the IBF strap currently held by his compatriot, William Scull.
However, that IBF belt is widely expected to return to Canelo Alvarez, potentially after his May 3 fight, which would give Iglesias an even greater incentive to secure a mandatory challenger position.
Meanwhile, Jeffers recently returned to action last Sunday, achieving a decisive second-round stoppage win, although it was against a less challenging opponent, ahead of his upcoming wedding.
His most impressive win to date occurred in 2023 when `The Dog` caused a notable upset by comfortably outpointing Zak Chelli.
Despite his lack of world-level experience thus far, Jeffers, who is ranked seventh by the IBF, has expressed his eagerness to face Iglesias at a moment`s notice.
While promoter Ben Shalom is eager for the Iglesias fight to happen, there is also an alternative plan for Jeffers to potentially feature at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley on June 7.
Ben Shalom confirmed the potential Iglesias fight, stating, “It’s something that’s been offered to us, and we’re trying to make it happen.”
He added, “The deal’s not done, but it’s something we’re very interested in. If it’s not [Iglesias], [Jeffers’] next fight will be on June 7, on the Callum Simpson show.”
Shalom concluded, “So we’ll just see which deal gets done the quickest. I know Mark wants that [Iglesias] fight and we’re happy to take it. Hopefully it gets over the line.”
Thus, while a path could lead Jeffers to a clash with Callum Simpson, who is preparing for a European title fight against Ivan Zucco, the potential bout against Osleys Iglesias appears to be the preferred option for Jeffers` next move at this time.
