Ben Askren, the well-known former fighter across promotions like UFC, Bellator, and ONE Championship, has undergone a successful double lung transplant, according to an update from his wife, Amy.
Askren had been hospitalized for several weeks battling severe pneumonia. Approximately a week prior to this update, Amy Askren had shared that Ben was officially placed on the transplant list for his lungs.
Confirming the positive development on Monday via her Facebook page, Amy Askren stated, “We are so thankful to share that Ben has received a double lung transplant. We are forever thankful to the donor and his family.” She reflected on the rapid change in his health, noting that it felt surreal that he was healthy just five weeks earlier.
Emphasizing the significance of the procedure, Amy added, “This is the beginning of a new lifestyle for Ben, but every new day he has is a gift.” She requested continued prayers for Ben`s recovery and for his body to accept the new lungs. She also expressed gratitude for the support they have received.
Askren`s severe pneumonia required intensive care, including being placed on a ventilator and an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine. The MMA community has consistently offered prayers and support throughout his health struggle, which appears to have culminated in this successful surgery.
Even his former opponent, Jake Paul, had indicated a willingness to assist Askren with the surgery costs following his recent boxing win.
