Bellator Champ Patchy Mix Becomes Free Agent After PFL Agreement

Sports news » Bellator Champ Patchy Mix Becomes Free Agent After PFL Agreement

Patchy Mix, the former Bellator bantamweight champion, has emerged as the most prominent free agent currently available in the world of combat sports. His release was officially confirmed following an announcement by the PFL on Tuesday, stating that the league and Mix mutually agreed not to extend his existing contract, effectively allowing him to seek a new fighting home.

In an official statement released Tuesday, PFL officials commented, “Professional Fighters League and Patchy Mix have mutually agreed to not extend his contract. We both decided this is the best course of action for PFL and him.” The statement also added, “Patchy is a fantastic fighter and we wish him well. PFL is excited to crown our next 135 pound champion in the PFL World Tournament.”

This resolution brings an end to a situation that has developed over several months. Mix had previously and publicly expressed his frustration regarding inactivity, particularly following the cancellation of a scheduled bout against Leandro Higo in November. In the wake of that cancellation, Mix had formally requested his release from the promotion.

Since that time, Mix continued to vocalize his dissatisfaction and frustration towards PFL concerning the lack of opportunities to compete. His most recent appearance inside the cage was in May 2024, where he secured a victory over Magomed Magomedov in a rematch.

That win marked Mix’s seventh consecutive victory, significantly boosting his impressive professional record to 20 wins against only 1 loss. Regrettably, the extended period of inactivity prevented him from defending his Bellator title further or extending his impressive winning streak within the promotion.

It now appears that both parties have successfully reached a mutual understanding to part ways.

Given his high standing as arguably the top bantamweight fighter not currently signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), it is widely anticipated that the promotion will show immediate and significant interest in Mix. He trains in Las Vegas, frequently working alongside the reigning UFC bantamweight champion, Merab Dvalishvili, and has repeatedly expressed his strong aspiration to compete on the prestigious UFC roster.

Following this agreement with the PFL, it seems highly probable that Mix may finally receive the opportunity he has been actively seeking.
