Belfast boxer Steven Ward has publicly announced his decision to retire from the sport, sharing the news on Instagram. The fighter from Newtownabbey ends his professional career holding a record of 15 wins against 4 losses, with 4 victories coming by knockout. His retirement was met with numerous messages of support from within the boxing community.

“All the best big Steve, pleasure to share a part of your journey with you! Go and enjoy life,” wrote fellow Belfastman Michael Conlan.

Dev Sahni also commented, saying: “Best of luck my friend, congratulations on a brilliant and memorable career.”

Trainer Jamie Moore, welterweight contender Lewis Crocker, and Monaghan`s Stevie McKenna were among others who congratulated Ward on his nine-year professional career. Before turning professional at the Titanic Exhibition Centre, Ward had a successful amateur background, which included winning a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and competing in many Irish Senior tournaments.

Ward began his career competing at light-heavyweight. In 2018, he featured on the Carl Frampton undercard at Windsor Park, securing a victory over Steve Collins Jr. Later in his career, he moved up to the cruiserweight division. A persistent issue for Ward throughout his career was suffering cuts. He took a significant break from boxing after a loss to Kamshybek Kunkabayev in 2021.

He attempted a return in early 2024, hoping for one more significant achievement. Known as `The Quiet Man`, he first suffered a loss in Dubai but then achieved a notable knockout win against his long-time Belfast sparring partner, Tommy McCarthy, in their hometown. This victory will undoubtedly be a highlight moment for Steven.

His final bout took place in Ipswich at the start of June against Cork-based Cuban Mike Perez. Despite managing some successful moments, Ward was knocked down twice before his corner ultimately stopped the fight by throwing in the towel. Unless he decides to make another comeback, this appears to be the last fight of Ward`s boxing career.
