Arnold Barboza Jr Sets Sights on Teofimo Lopez After Interim Title Victory
Following his triumphant performance in Manchester, undefeated super lightweight Arnold Barboza Jr has made it clear that Teofimo Lopez is his primary target for his next bout.
The California native traveled to the UK to face Jack Catterall, narrowly defeating the Chorley boxer by split decision at the Co-op Live Arena. This victory secured Barboza the WBO Interim super lightweight title and positioned him as the mandatory challenger for world champion Teofimo Lopez.
Lopez, who hasn’t fought since defending his title against Steve Claggett last June, is rumored to be planning a summer return. However, it remains uncertain whether he will retain his championship as he pursues more lucrative opportunities.
Should Lopez vacate the title, Barboza, now 32-0 (11 KOs), could potentially be elevated to full champion status. Regardless, Lopez remains at the top of Barboza’s list of desired opponents.
“Teofimo is my primary target, but if that fight can’t be made, I’m open to any significant matchup,” Barboza stated in a post-fight interview. When asked if he believed Lopez had been avoiding him, Barboza replied, “It’s been that way for the past four years.”
Lopez, known for his active social media presence, responded to a post featuring Barboza’s emotional post-fight celebration, saying, “It’s just an Interim Belt. Don’t get too excited! It’s not classified as a world title. You all know who the real champion is.”
As the boxing world awaits Lopez’s next move, the stage is set for a potential high-stakes showdown between these two talented super lightweights.
