Anthony Smith Reflects on Unexpected Final UFC Bout
Veteran UFC fighter Anthony Smith was taken aback when he learned of his final opponent in the octagon. The light heavyweight contender is set to face Zhang Mingyang at UFC Kansas City on April 26, marking the end of his illustrious career.
Smith, known as “Lionheart,” initially expressed surprise at the matchup, given the significant disparity in UFC experience between himself and Zhang. However, after careful consideration, Smith began to understand the logic behind the UFC’s decision.
“At first, I was quite startled by the choice,” Smith revealed on his podcast. “But after researching Zhang and pondering it, I can see why they went this route.”
The seasoned fighter acknowledged the challenge in finding suitable opponents for emerging talents like Zhang. Smith believes the UFC sees him as an ideal test for the up-and-coming light heavyweight.
Dismissing notions that he’s being set up as a stepping stone, Smith shared insights from his conversations with UFC matchmakers. “They’ve always been straightforward with me,” he stated. “Their focus is on creating exciting fights and interesting matchups.”
Smith’s most recent outing at UFC 310 resulted in a second-round knockout loss to Dominick Reyes. Despite this setback, Smith felt compelled to have a proper farewell fight in the UFC.
“I want to savor every moment of my last fight week,” Smith explained. “From the final training camp to expressing gratitude to the entire UFC staff who’ve supported us throughout the years.”
As he prepares for his retirement bout, Smith is currently focused on getting into shape for the upcoming training camp. The emotional weight of his final fight has yet to fully set in as he concentrates on the physical demands ahead.
