Anthony Cacace and Leigh Wood both successfully made weight for their upcoming super-featherweight bout in Nottingham, each tipping the scales at 129.8 pounds.
The weigh-in took place at Nottingham Arena, a venue holding significant history for Wood, being the site of his dramatic final-round knockout victory over Michael Conlan of Belfast three years prior. This time, the challenge from Belfast is posed by Cacace, who carries a record of 23 wins (8 by knockout) and 1 loss. Notably, Cacace vacated his IBF world title to pave the way for this highly anticipated fight against Wood, whose record stands at 28 wins (17 by knockout) and 3 losses.
Throughout the week, both fighters have displayed mutual respect. However, their face-to-face encounter at the weigh-in brought a noticeable surge of intensity. Despite this, sportsmanship prevailed, concluding with an embrace between the two boxers.
Speaking after the weigh-in, Wood addressed his supporters via Queensberry`s Dev Sahni, stating, “Bring the noise, I’ll bring the rest. I won’t disappoint, I promise.” Differing from many of his previous contests, Wood enters this Saturday`s fight as the underdog. He responded confidently to this status, saying, “I always perform best when I’m the underdog.”
Cacace, supported by his traveling contingent at the weigh-in, expressed his readiness for the challenge. “It’s time to go. This was the final stretch. Now to refuel. Let’s fight. I’m just raring to go,” he remarked.
Wood boasts a 61% knockout rate, but his celebrated punching power will face a test at the super-featherweight limit, which is four pounds heavier than his usual fighting weight. Cacace seemed unfazed, commenting, “Power’s one thing in this sport. What’s he going to do, just keep throwing bombs? He needs to be able to box and adapt to different situations. I’ve got power as well. We’ll find out on the night.”
