Adesanya Eyes Fall Rematch with Strickland, Notes His Quietness

Sports news » Adesanya Eyes Fall Rematch with Strickland, Notes His Quietness

Former middleweight champion Israel Adesanya is looking to secure a rematch against Sean Strickland later this year.

Adesanya`s 2023 campaign was a rollercoaster. In April, he finally overcame his rival Alex Pereira with a spectacular second-round knockout at UFC 287, reclaiming the title and earning Knockout of the Year honors. However, his reign was short-lived, as he lost the belt to Strickland in a dominant decision just five months later at UFC 293. Now, Adesanya is eager to get back into the octagon and avenge that loss.

Speaking to reporters on the red carpet at the 2025 UFC Hall of Fame ceremony, where his 2019 fight with Kelvin Gastelum was inducted, Adesanya confirmed his hopes to face Strickland again in either September or October.

Regarding Strickland`s recent demeanor, Adesanya commented, “I think he`s going through something. I haven`t really seen anything myself, but someone sent me a screenshot, like, `Oh, he`s fat now.` I saw it and was like, oh shit.”

“Sean’s a guy who definitely has a lot of old school stuff, trauma he has to deal with. We all go through shit,” Adesanya continued. “But for him, that’s easy. He should have just said something and start roasting me or whatever. That’s a Sean Strickland thing to do, but he’s been quiet.”

Adesanya concluded with a mix of concern and characteristic humor: “Sean, it`s June, men’s mental health month. I hope you’re looking out for your mental health, and also looking out for your physical health. You fat bitch. [Laughs].”

Strickland`s silence proved temporary. Shortly after Adesanya`s remarks, Strickland was involved in a controversial incident in Las Vegas, storming the cage at a Tuff-N-Uff event and punching a fighter who had provoked him after defeating one of Strickland`s teammates. It remains uncertain whether this outburst will result in a suspension from athletic commissions, which could potentially complicate Adesanya`s plans for a fall rematch.
